As soon as Jonah began to run from God, everything in his life began to go down. First he went DOWN to Joppa ..the opposite direction from Nineveh, where God told him to go. From there he went DOWN into a boat headed to Tarshish. And when the Lord sent a storm to drive him out, they threw him DOWN into the sea where God had sent a big fish to swallow him. Therefore, he went DOWN into the belly of the fish and he stayed there in the belly of the fish until he called upon the Lord. It was then that God turned him around and had the fish spit him up back on the path where he belonged.
One thing you can be sure of...you cannot run fast enough or far enough to get away from God. He knows where you are and He knows how to turn circumstances around to get you back on the path that He has planned for your life. The best thing to do is to stop running and surrender to the will of God for your life. He has something so much better in store for you if you will just humble yourself, call on the Lord and surrender your life to Him.
And another thing we can learn from this story...if you know someone who's running from God, you definitely don't want to get into the same boat with them, or your life is bound to get pretty rocky too. Don't let their disobedience bring a storm to your peaceful sea.
"From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God." (Jonah 2:1)
