7 Characteristics of a Relevant Church

A relevant church is not about being trendy or popular in the eyes of the world—it is about being alive in Christ and impacting both its members and the community for God’s glory. A church that truly matters in today’s world demonstrates characteristics that reflect God’s heart and purposes. Here are seven key characteristics of a relevant church.

1. Deep Prayer Life (relation-ship with God)

A relevant church prioritizes its relationship with God above all else. Prayer is not just a routine or a program—it is the heartbeat of the church. When a congregation prays together, seeks God’s guidance, and intercedes for one another and the world, the church remains spiritually vibrant.

“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

2. Strong Biblical Teaching (fresh Word from God)

A relevant church feeds its members with fresh, uncompromised truth from God’s Word. Sound Biblical teaching equips believers to understand God’s will, stand firm in faith, and apply Scripture to daily life. Leaders who handle the Word accurately inspire spiritual growth and maturity.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

3. Good Discipleship Program (teaching to live for the Lord)

It’s not enough for members to attend; a relevant church intentionally invests in growth. A strong discipleship program teaches believers how to live Christ-centered lives, study the Word, and multiply their faith in others. Growth in knowledge and spiritual maturity keeps the church alive and impactful.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

4. Spirit-Filled Worship (inviting the presence of God)

Worship in a relevant church is not just music—it is an invitation for God’s presence to move freely among His people. Spirit-filled worship draws hearts to God, ignites passion for Him, and transforms ordinary gatherings into encounters with the Holy Spirit.

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

5. Builds Strong Relationships (true fellowship/accountability)

A relevant church fosters authentic fellowship. Members care for one another, hold each other accountable, and cultivate a family atmosphere. Strong relationships strengthen the body, encourage perseverance, and reflect Christ’s love to the world.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

6. Community Outreach & Service (building a Godly reputation)

A church that matters does not exist for itself—it serves others. By meeting practical needs, demonstrating compassion, and supporting the community, the church builds a Godly reputation. Its influence is seen in actions that honor Christ and point others to Him.

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

7. Strong World Missions Emphasis (world awareness)

A relevant church is outward-focused, aware of the world’s spiritual and physical needs, and committed to spreading the Gospel beyond its walls. Missions remind the church that God’s kingdom extends globally, and believers are called to partner in that work.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

A relevant church is one that remains true to God’s Word, nurtures its people spiritually, serves its community, and reaches out to the world with the love of Christ. By embracing these seven characteristics, a church not only survives in today’s culture but thrives in fulfilling God’s eternal purpose.

It’s easy to think of “the church” as a building or an organization, but in reality, we are the church. That means the characteristics of a relevant church begin with each of us as individual believers.

When we pray deeply, hunger for God’s Word, grow as disciples, worship in Spirit and truth, build genuine relationships, serve our community, and keep our eyes on world missions—we embody the very heartbeat of Christ for His people.

Take a moment today to reflect: Which of these seven areas is strongest in your life right now? Which area needs more growth? Ask the Lord to strengthen you so that your life reflects His church in action.

Prayer:

“Lord, help me to be a living part of Your Church that is relevant, Spirit-filled, and faithful. Teach me to pray more, love more, serve more, and reach further with the Gospel. May my life and my church glorify You and draw many to Christ. In Jesus Name…Amen.”
